Getting Around Lawton: Public Transit, Parking, and Commute Tips

By Travis Wright ·

Lawton is a car-friendly city, but there are more options than you might expect. Here is how to get around, from LATS transit to parking and weekend commute trips. Whether you are relocating to Fort Sill, renting for your first year, or just visiting, this guide explains how people actually move around Southwest Oklahoma every day.

Lawton Is Built Around the Car

Like most cities in the region, Lawton is a car-oriented community, and most residents rely on a personal vehicle for commuting and daily errands. Streets are laid out in a straightforward grid, parking is generally easy and free at most businesses, and traffic is light compared to larger metros. For a full breakdown of routes and drive times to nearby cities, see our commute and drive time guide.

Public Transit in Lawton

Lawton does have a public transit option. The Lawton Area Transit System (LATS) operates fixed bus routes across the city, covering major corridors that connect shopping areas, medical facilities, and residential neighborhoods. LATS runs Monday through Saturday, making it a practical option for getting around town without a car.

For qualifying residents, Comanche Nation Transit provides transportation services in the Lawton-Fort Sill area, including rides to medical appointments, employment, and daily errands, with service extending to some surrounding communities. If you drive for work or commute to post, our Fort Sill community guide covers gate access and on-post ground rules.

On-Demand Rides

Uber and Lyft both operate in the Lawton area, providing on-demand rides when you need them, whether that is a trip from the airport, a night out, or a ride while your own car is in the shop. Availability can vary by time of day, so give yourself a little extra margin if your plans are time-sensitive.

Airports and Longer Trips

Lawton-Fort Sill Regional Airport offers daily commercial flights, and for more connections many residents drive to Will Rogers World Airport in Oklahoma City, about 86 miles northeast via I-44 and I-40. For frequent business travel, the OKC drive of about 1 hour 20 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes is a common alternative to regional flights. When you get home, planning and parking is straightforward, so weekend trips are easy to fit into a single tank of gas.

Parking and Day-to-Day Tips

Parking is rarely a hassle in Lawton. Downtown, near events like the Armed Forces Day Parade, and at popular spots like local weekly events, arriving a little early makes finding a good spot easy. Beyond transportation, setting up the essentials of your new home, including utilities and internet, is the other half of settling in comfortably.
