Lawton's Dining Scene: Mexican, Sushi, Steakhouse, and Global Cuisine

By Travis Wright ·

Beyond BBQ and pizza, Lawton offers Mexican cuisine, sushi, steakhouses, and global dining options. Here is a guide to the variety in Southwest Oklahoma. Lawton's restaurant scene has quietly grown into something more diverse than many people expect. Whether you are craving sushi, a perfectly cooked steak, or authentic Mexican food, there are solid options across the city.

Mexican Cuisine in Lawton

Mexican food is well represented in Lawton, with several family-run restaurants serving everything from street tacos to full combination platters. El Tapatio on Cache Road is a local staple known for its consistent quality, margaritas, and generous portions. Taqueria el Rey on NW 67th Street offers more authentic tacos, tortas, and burritos that draw a loyal following. Torero's near Central Mall provides a sit-down dining experience with a full bar and a menu that includes fajitas, enchiladas, and seafood options.

For those who prefer a quick lunch or takeout, Taco Casa has been a Lawton institution for years, and a second location is expected to open soon on the west side. And for late-night cravings, several taquerias around the city serve until late in the evening. The Lawton area also has a growing number of Mexican grocery stores with in-house delis that serve freshly made tacos and tamales. For a broader view of the local dining scene including our favorite BBQ and pizza spots, see our BBQ, Mexican Food, and Pizza guide.

Sushi and Asian Cuisine

Lawton has several restaurants offering Japanese, Chinese, and Vietnamese options. Tokyo Japanese Steakhouse on Cache Road combines hibachi grill dining with sushi rolls, making it a popular choice for birthdays and group outings. Thai Garden in southwest Lawton serves traditional Thai curries, noodle dishes, and spring rolls in a relaxed setting. For Chinese food, Golden Dragon and China One offer classic American-Chinese fare for dine-in or takeout, and both have been serving the community for years.

Samurai Japanese Cuisine near the Lawton/Fort Sill area offers sushi rolls and Japanese entree dishes. Military families returning from assignments in Japan or other parts of Asia often stop in for sushi when they are back in the area. For a quick lunch, several grocery stores in Lawton also offer freshly prepared sushi rolls.

Steakhouses and American Dining

When you want a good steak, Lawton delivers. The old Cattlemen's Steakhouse location has transitioned but the tradition of well-cooked beef continues at several local spots. Freddie's Smokehouse & Grill on Cache Road serves steaks alongside their BBQ menu in a casual, family-friendly atmosphere. Weber's Root Beer & Root Beer Stand, a Lawton landmark, serves burgers, fries, and root beer floats in a drive-in setting that has been around for decades.

For a more modern dining experience, Hatch Early Mood Food opened in downtown Lawton in 2025 and brought a contemporary brunch concept featuring bowls, avocado toast, craft coffee, and a weekend brunch crowd that fills the space quickly. SOB Brewing, Lawton's first craft brewery, opened on SW 2nd Street in 2025 and serves pub food alongside house-made beers in a taproom setting that has quickly become a community gathering spot.

If you want to explore a wider range of American classics and breakfast-all-day options, our Coffee Shops and Breakfast Spots guide covers diners, bakeries, and morning favorites across Lawton.

Family Dining and Casual Eats

Lawton has plenty of casual restaurants where families can eat out without breaking the budget. Our Family-Friendly Restaurants guide covers the best spots for dining with kids, but a few standouts include Chelino's Mexican Grill for a lively atmosphere, Bricktown Brewery for burgers and American pub food, and Pizza by Square for Detroit-style pizza. For classic fast-casual dining, the usual national chains are well represented throughout the city.

If you are looking for a quick bite while exploring the area, Elmer Thomas Park and Lake Lawtonka have picnic areas where you can enjoy takeout from nearby restaurants. Many Lawton restaurants offer to-go orders, and services like DoorDash and Grubhub operate in the area. Our Elmer Thomas Park and Lake Lawtonka guide has more information on picnic spots and outdoor dining locations.

Dining in Nearby Communities

If you are willing to drive a few minutes outside Lawton, you will find dining options worth the trip. Medicine Park, about 20 minutes northwest, has several restaurants and cafes that cater to weekend visitors. The Medicine Park General Store serves sandwiches and ice cream, while the Old Plant Restaurant offers classic American comfort food in a historic cobblestone building. Our Weekend Guide to Medicine Park has dining recommendations for a full day trip.

Elgin has a handful of local restaurants that serve the community, including Elgin Pizza and several Mexican options. Cache has a few family-run spots near the school and downtown area. And for a complete guide to every restaurant category in the area, including breakfast, BBQ, and coffee shops, visit our Dining and Nightlife guide.

New and Coming Soon

Lawton's dining scene continues to expand. Beyond SOB Brewing and Hatch Early Mood Food which opened in 2025, a second Chick-fil-A location opened near 82nd Street in November, Taco Casa brought its first Lawton location to Cache Road in January 2026, and Best Buy returned to town with a standalone store at the Lawton Town Center later that spring. Downtown Lawton has seen increased interest from restaurateurs, and the stretch along Cache Road continues to be the main dining corridor. For anyone moving to the area wondering if there are good places to eat, the answer is yes and the list keeps growing. Our full restaurant guide has the complete directory of every dining option in the Lawton area.
