By Travis Wright, REALTOR®, with eXp Realty ·

Lawton and the nearby Wichita Mountains offer everything from paved lakeside paths to challenging singletrack and long scenic road climbs. Whether you are a casual rider looking for an easy loop or a serious cyclist chasing elevation, the area around Lawton and Fort Sill has a route for you. Here are the best bike trails and cycling routes in and around Lawton.

Where Can I Mountain Bike Near Lawton?

For mountain bikers, the Lake Lawtonka trails are the standout destination near the city. Roughly 20 miles of singletrack wind along the lake's south and west shores in six connected loops, mixing rock gardens, short steep climbs, fast rolling meadows, and dry creek crossings. Most of the terrain is intermediate in difficulty, so it suits riders with some trail experience. The reward is constant lake views framed by the Wichita Mountains in the distance.

What Is the LETRA Trail at Lake Elmer Thomas?

Inside the Lake Elmer Thomas Recreation Area, the LETRA Trail is a paved, mostly flat path of about 2.8 miles along the lake's northeast corner. It is an easy, family-friendly ride with open lake views and a good chance of spotting wildlife like bison in the nearby fields. Because it is smooth and wide, it works well for casual riders, kids on training wheels, and runners alike.

What Is the Elmer Thomas Park Outer Loop?

Closer to downtown, the paved outer loop at Elmer Thomas Park makes for a relaxed evening ride around the lake. It is an easy route with gentle grades, plenty of parking, and no technical sections, which makes it a dependable choice for a quick workout or a family outing after school.

Where Can I Road Cycle in the Wichita Mountains?

The Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge is one of the most scenic places to ride a road bike in Oklahoma. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service permits bicycles only on paved roads, the Mt. Scott Service Road, and the Lake Elmer Thomas Service Road, so plan your route accordingly. The Mt. Scott Service Road climb runs about 6 miles up to the 2,464-foot summit, where the panoramic views over the refuge and Fort Sill make the climb worthwhile.

For a longer ride, the Lake Elmer Thomas to Mt. Scott road loop stretches roughly 34 miles through the heart of the refuge, or you can start from Lawton on OK-49 west past Lake Lawtonka and into the refuge for a classic scenic road route. These roads see some vehicle traffic, so ride defensively and stay visible.

What Is the Tour of the Wichitas?

If you want to ride with a group, the annual Tour of the Wichitas bike ride offers 10-mile and 26-mile routes that pass through historic Fort Sill and the Wichita Mountains. The 2026 edition is scheduled for June 20. It is a great way to explore routes you might not try on your own and to meet other cyclists in the Lawton-Fort Sill area.
