Elk Rut Season in the Wichita Mountains: When and Where to See Bugling Elk (2026)

By Travis Wright, REALTOR®, with eXp Realty ·

The elk rut peaks in the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge each September and October. Here's when and where to see bugling elk near Lawton in 2026. The bugle of a bull elk is one of the most distinctive sounds in the outdoors, and every fall it echoes through the granite canyons of the refuge just a short drive northwest of Lawton. This guide covers when the rut peaks, where to look, how to book a guided tour, and the rules that keep both people and wildlife safe.

When Does the Elk Rut Peak in the Wichita Mountains?

The elk rut generally runs from early September into October, with bugling typically peaking in late September and through October. Bulls become more visible and more vocal as they compete for mates, and their high-pitched bugles carry surprisingly far across the refuge. Elk are most active around sunrise and sunset, so plan to be out early in the morning or in the final hours before the refuge closes for the day.

Where Are the Best Places to See Elk?

Roughly 22,400 acres of the refuge are open to the public, with about 15 miles of trails, and elk regularly appear in open grasslands and around granite outcrops. The Elk Mountain area is one of the most dependable spots: vistas from Treasure Lake and along the Elk Mountain Trail frequently turn up elk grazing or resting nearby. Driving the paved roads slowly with the windows down is another strong strategy, because elk often feed close to the road in the early morning and evening. The elk share the refuge with bison, longhorn cattle, and white-tailed deer, so bring binoculars and take your time. For trail details, our roundup of the best hiking trails near Lawton covers the Elk Mountain route and the other standouts.

How Do I Book a Bugling Elk Tour?

The most reliable elk viewing of all happens inside the refuge's Special Use Area, roughly 37,000 acres that stay closed to the general public. The only way in is through the reservation-only Bugling Elk Tours offered by Friends of the Wichitas in cooperation with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Tours depart from the Visitor Center on Saturdays and Sundays during the rut; the 2026 schedule runs September 12 through 26 and October 3 through 24, with departures at 5:30 p.m. in September and 5:00 p.m. in October. Space is limited and dates fill quickly, so book ahead on the Friends of the Wichitas tour page.

What Are the Rules for Viewing Elk Safely?

Elk are wild animals and can be dangerous during the rut, especially the bulls. Stay in or on your vehicle on paved roads and at designated pullouts, keep a generous distance, and never approach, feed, or crowd the animals. Unless you are actively fishing, all parking areas, pullouts, refuge side roads, and trailheads close at sunset, and the refuge itself is open roughly from sunrise to sunset. The Visitor Center at the junction of Highways 49 and 115 is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Temporary closures do happen, so check the refuge's current rules page before you head out, and our complete guide to the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge has more detail on hours, permits, and what to bring.

How Do I Make a Full Day of Elk Watching?

Elk watching pairs naturally with the rest of the refuge and the surrounding communities. Start early at the elk areas, spend the middle of the day hiking or poking around Medicine Park's cobblestone downtown, and finish with dinner back in Lawton. Campers have plenty of options close by, from refuge campgrounds to private RV parks near the mountains; our campground and RV park guide covers where to stay overnight. If you are new to the area, the things to do in Southwest Oklahoma page collects the full menu of lakes, trails, and family attractions.

Few experiences in Southwest Oklahoma are as memorable as watching a bull elk bugle at golden hour with the Wichitas behind him, and late September and October are the weeks to make it happen. Pack binoculars, dress for the weather, and give yourself time to drive the scenic routes slowly.
