Thanksgiving in Lawton Oklahoma (2026 Guide): Events, Dinners, and Things to Do

By Travis Wright, REALTOR®, with eXp Realty ·

Thanksgiving 2026 falls on Thursday, November 26, in Lawton and across the country. Whether you are hosting a full meal at home, looking for a community dinner at Fort Sill, or hoping to give back through volunteering, there are plenty of ways to spend the holiday in Southwest Oklahoma. This guide covers the dates, the dinners, the volunteer options, and what else is happening around town as the season gets started. For a rolling list of what is happening each week, check the things to do in Lawton this week page.

When Is Thanksgiving 2026?

Thanksgiving is always the fourth Thursday of November, which puts Thanksgiving 2026 on Thursday, November 26, 2026. The day before, Wednesday, November 25, is when many schools in the area let out for the break, and the Lawton-Fort Sill community hosts its annual military Thanksgiving meal. If you are planning travel, a family gathering, or a shopping run for Black Friday, mark the week of November 23 through 29 on your calendar.

Community Thanksgiving Dinners at Fort Sill

Military families and service members have a long-standing Thanksgiving tradition at the Fort Sill USO. The USO hosts its annual Gobble-Fest Extravaganza Thanksgiving meal on Wednesday, November 25, 2026, at noon at the USO Center, 3265 Crane Ave on post. The meal is free and open to valid DOD ID card holders, including active duty, Guard, and Reserve members and their families, and it is dine-in only. In past years the Fort Sill USO has served Thanksgiving meals to hundreds of service members and family members on Thanksgiving Day itself. For details on base programs and family support, see our military resources page and the Fort Sill community guide.

The Comanche Indian Veterans Association also traditionally distributes Thanksgiving food baskets to Army National Guard soldiers and their families assigned to Fort Sill each November, hosted in the CIVA Patriot Room. These food basket distributions are a recurring community program, so military families are encouraged to watch base announcements in November for sign-up details.

Where to Volunteer or Give Back on Thanksgiving

If your holiday plans include helping others, Lawton has several organizations that welcome volunteers throughout the season. The Lawton Food Bank offers year-round volunteer opportunities, including client shopping, sorting donations, and food distribution, with volunteers under 16 required to be accompanied by an adult. You can find sign-up details at lawtonfoodbank.org. The Salvation Army Lawton Corps also recruits holiday volunteers for its Christmas kettle bell-ringing shifts, which begin in November at area stores like Walmart.

Local churches and community organizations frequently publish free Thanksgiving community feeds in the weeks before the holiday. The final 2026 lineups are typically announced in November, so check KSWO and Southwest Oklahoma News closer to the date for confirmations and sign-up information.

Restaurants Open on Thanksgiving in Lawton

If you would rather let someone else do the cooking, a handful of Lawton restaurants have served Thanksgiving dinners in recent years. Golden Corral and Cracker Barrel both traditionally offer Thanksgiving meals, and local favorites such as Sam's Soul Food & BarBQ, Mutti's German Restaurant, and Red Boot Grill have appeared on holiday dining lists as well. Hours and holiday menus change every year, so call ahead to confirm what each restaurant is offering on November 26. What Else Is Happening Around the Holiday

Thanksgiving weekend is also the unofficial start of the holiday season in Lawton. Holiday in the Park at Elmer Thomas Park, the Christmas parade, and festive light displays across Lawton, Fort Sill, and Medicine Park typically follow within the next few weeks. Bookmark our Christmas and holiday events guide so you are ready when the lights come on, and for the full picture of celebrations throughout the year, see our annual events and festivals guide.
